Artist's Comments

Author and intellectual Christopher Hitchens. He's a very prickly customer, but his debates are very interesting.

This piece is painted similar to the way that I painted the Rachel McAdams image. A bit simplified with a "smoother" appearance. Starting with a black and white value painting then adding color overlays in Photoshop.

Hitchens is surely an interesting character. And yes, his debates are very entertaining. He is a very smart person and a true modern intellectual.

I love how you captured him. You can recognize that stare anywhere XD. Very nice work.

When you do these portraits, do you use one layer or several?

I use several. For example, with this one I had a full value b/w painting of him then added color overlays on new layers then merged them together and then painted a little more on the merged layer.

cool. Thanks for the info. Your work is really wonderful.

One mistake, the pin on his lapel is not an American flag, it is the flag of Kurdistan.

I don't know what you mean. He gained US citizenship a while ago and was wearing an American flag pin in several appearances.
:iconleererkaiser:
Generally, Mr. Hitchens is wearing a Kurdistan pin to show his solidarity with the Kurds, the largest group of people in the world not to have their own country. The Kurdish people are aiding in the fight against the United States' enemies and Hitchens also has many Kurdish friends. I merely meant to point out he more often than not wears the Kurdish flag pin as opposed to the American. However, my comment was not a serious critique, of course, it does not really matter.

This is great at capturing that look he gives when he's on TV and someone else is talking- you get the distinct feeling that he already knows what everyone else is going to say before they say it and he's getting bored.

I really like him and your rendition of him!
